John Hanc's reading advisory is sound but I would amend that for all freelance work, one should read *more* than one writes. Also remember that reading memes and internet junk doesn't count until you have done a lot of other reading. Even if Internet memes and junk are your intended freelance specialty. You would still have to read real books about advertising, memoirs and how-to by the greats, contemporary novels, and tons of less directed stuff. Hemingway might have had some bad attitudes, but his use of prepositions is nonpareil. (Look up words you don't know, even if you aren't going to use them right away. Read poetry for the language, and how it can be bent around.
