More than 95% of errors made by employees are unintentional. Therefore, it is vital that a good leader digs down into the root cause of why this happened. Is your employee working too many shifts, and chronically exhausted? Is their workload unreasonable? Maybe something is going on in their home life, like divorce or caring for aging parents. Sometimes the employee doesn’t even know why they made the error, and that’s why leaders should be running reports to ensure that the workload is reasonable. Understanding that few people want to mess up, and most are very upset when they do, can help reframe the conversation into “What can you do to prevent this in the future, and how can I help?”
