Finally, don’t give up. Persistence is key, even if there are setbacks. Keep experimenting and refining until you get it right.

With influx of management of resources and costing going up ,they need to plan better use of available materials than earlier and plan for recycled/reuse/refurbished materials as well !

R&D is working on something that hasn't been worked upon earlier. That is to say there is no written down SOP for doing what you intend to do. So, what is needed, how much of it, when it will be needed nothing of it is known, and that's a day-to-day affair. Resource management is the key in a scenario like this. Anyone good at R&D can definitely be a good planner.

Resource management requires planning and tracking. It's easy at the beginning: "Only [X] and [Y] are available, they have some relevant skills, so let's have them set some goals and see where we get to". While that sounds good enough (and even is good enough at first), there are a lot of other factors to consider: -What are the specific milestones? -How are we evaluating regular progress before a milestone date? -Does [X] and/or [Y] have the bandwidth? -Does [X] and/or [Y] have the skills necessary to do the R&D? Planning, regular evaluation, and honest resource performance assessment all provide input to resource management. You're going to run into road blocks. The sooner you find them, the sooner you can pivot and reach success.

You can find two different kinds of engineers. The first is methodic, analytic, a lesson learner, this engineer follows the design practices and handbooks. The second one is creative, a thinker out of the box. If you want to be in the R&D, you must be the second... Never take a "this is the way we always do" If a design practice "does not recommend" or "restrict" find the loophole and ammend it. Do not limit yourself, always challenge the status quo.

For new ideas, I still try to get in touch with my university colleagues, because in my opinion you don't have to know everything, you just have to know how to find someone who does. There are things you can't easily find on the internet, but a colleague can help you find them.

The only real failure is when you are not measuring your outcomes and cannot realise whether you should continue, stop or pivot - thus destined to repeat the same mistakes

Failure is an integral part of R&D. One should never be afraid of "1st time failure".. embrace it, learn from it, and don't repeat the same failure..

Addressing failure is the greatest learning experience. In R&D, it's the initial and most crucial step toward achieving success. You need to combine your instincts and experience. Equally important is recognizing that if you never fail initially, you might never encounter failure again. Embracing failure is a hallmark of good R&D practice, but not learning from your failures can lead to a chain reaction.

Fail early, fail often. You've heard something like this before, you know in your heart that this way leads to success... so why is it so hard to do? The companies that do this the best are the ones that are able to shield the R&D team as much as possible from investor pressures, funding situations, and other 'noise'. Let your R&D team focus on developing, failing, learning, and iterating as fast as possible, and you'll make a ton of progress, but more importantly, it'll be un-influenced progress. Once your team is in that mindset, it'll be easier to look at failures as a positive learning experience as opposed to a tough conversation to have with a stakeholder outside of the team. The learning and progress will accelerate!
