Vision statements are key! A vision statement is your beacon, your guiding light to all that you are doing. It is your litmus test that you can bounce any strategic decision-making against. If it aligns with the vision, consider it, if not, drop it and move on to the next idea. Secondly is values. Your values are your benchmark on how you are going to execute daily. Your strategic decision must be able to be executed utilizing your values. If the decision aligns with your vision and can be executed with your values, you are able to distill the strategic decisions down. From there, then it goes to the assessment of what is better - will it help achieve our long/short term goals, is it in the budget, what is the ROI, etc.

Make sure you have strong systems for gathering and analyzing data, and learn to tell the difference between what’s relevant and what’s not. One thing I've learned is to fully understand the importance of data gathering. First you have to have a firm understanding of what stakeholders are looking to improve. Second, I've used Lean Agile and Six-Sigma techniques to gather data such as Gemba Walks, Role Playing, Root Cause Analysis, and Document Analysis, to understand the current state. These techniques among others have allowed me to identify gaps, cost improvements, and holes in the current process. This has allowed me to go back to stakeholders with specific data points for improvements. When I've implemented this process, leadership has a firm grasp of the current state and several scenarios for improving the client and associate experience. Which is achieving their goal.
