In my thirty-something years of industry, research, and university teaching experience, I have noticed that Mechanical Engineers, despite their capabilities and knowledge have a unique tendency to sway away from the learning process fairly early in their careers. This leads to a dearth of technology absorption which in turn causes a depreciation in their problem-solving and innovating abilities. Many graduates simply focus on managing stuff rather than getting-down to learning and absorbing technologies. Continuous or lifelong learning combined with hands-on skills, especially in new technologies including AI-embedded systems is the mechanism for embracing technology and hence the key to the professional growth of mechanical engineers.

As a mechanical engineer of new generation it is our duty to think out of the box and trying new concepts that can improve overall performance pricing and longevity of equipments/plants.Even adapting concepts of other industries and trying that in oil & gas can be of very use.

The worst approach is one where you continue doing something the same way because that is the way it has always been done. There may be many reasons why something is done a certain way but as technology changes it is always worth taking a look and re-evaluating how something is done. New technology may allow for a change which was not possible before. Being open to reviewing a new process or product is key to being able to improve.

Being Mechanical Engineer at Petrobras I have the opportunity to take Courses focused on the Oil and Gas industry regarding mechanical equipaments design and maintenance. Additionally I've been engaged in Online courses and reading articles and books that provide a fresh view from the current moment of transition to renewable sources of energies and I found the concept of EROI (Energy Return over Investment). Fossil Fuels have more than 10 times more EROI than renewable enegies, so financing and R&D is a must need in this context.

I would like to talk about main responsibility of a Mechanical Engineer is to perform a full lifecycle product development, which includes designing systems and components that meet specific needs and requirements. They are also tasked with conducting experiments methodically, analyzing data, interpreting results, testing theoretical designs, identifying and solving emerging problems effectively, evaluating the overall performance and safety of the final product modifying designs to meet requirements and eliminate malfunctions, estimating project budgets and scopes, preparing reports and documentation engaging in lifelong learning for continuous improvement and developing new theories or methods within the field of mechanical engineering.
