Bosses are often misunderstood. Because we report to them directly or indirectly, we feel they are being unrealistic about expectations. Having a positive outlook really helps. They are under as much - often more - pressure than we can fathom. Here’s why: 1. They are accountable for the mistakes their team makes. Their head is on the chopping block. 2. They are answerable to many more people than we do. 3. They need to manage various aspects of a team. 4. They need to share progress report of projects with higher management and any feedback, good or back, reflects on their abilities. 5. Etc. Etc. Etc. To think we are pressured by the boss is a myopic view of looking at things. Your boss is at that position for a reason. Respect that!

Know the difference between being friendly and being friends. Sometimes, we connect so deeply with our coworkers that the line between being friendly and being friends becomes blurred. Healthy friendships have an equal power dynamic. The power dynamic with your boss is hierarchical- it is not equal. Bosses that intentionally blur that line are either inexperienced or they have an ulterior motive.
