It's not only class or sequence diagram, an application first should be described using Activity Diagram (if not flowchart) which must highlight the components to be used and the logic flow. Then each component to be defined using class and sequence diagram. Lot of free tools are available to do this. Personally I use UMLET and DRAW.IO for this.

IDEs are almost standardized now. I prefer VS Code or VS Community Edition (Windows only) for my line of work (C#/Node/Python/PHP/SQL/React/Angular). Eclipse is another option but it's slow compared to VS Code.

APIs has to be defined first. But with this always changing requirement, we need to focus more on abstraction. Today APIs are defined in micro-services for better extensibility and scalability (though development time is slower than monolithic) and using some SAGA practices the changes can be achieved easily.

Earlier there was no term as DevOps(initially it was a buzz word to me). We used to build the project and used batch files to do the deployment once the smoke test is done as it was mostly XCOPY deployment that time. Later this building command came so same wa included in batch file (prior JENKINS). Now JENKINS (there are other tools but I am used to this) runs those commands on shell which ha made our life much easier. Suggest not using automated deployment on every check in as it makes the system too slow. Better plan for a deployment and trigger that manually.

Suggest following OWASP in this. Lot of samples and articles are there. This should include Authentication, Authorization, DDOS prevention, SSL/TLS, Man-in-the-middle attack prevention etc. Most application misses the security like BROKEN AUTHORIZATION when lot of roles/custom roles are defined. Suggest looking into it too.
