Yes all that set-goals stuff is fine. When I direct, I direct the people, not the material, and sometimes the goals go out the window when the people are not in tune with the objectives for whatever reason. When I start rehearsals, I am probing the actors for their personal strengths and weaknesses (vis-a-vis my interpretation of the scene), and I will adjust the scene to their strengths for maximum performance values.

Communication is key! Having a clear schedule of general and pocket rehearsal will help both the director and stage manager kill time wastages. Stating the goal of each rehearsal will as well help the actor to prepare ahead of time as against getting to know at the rehearsal ground.

Il y a quelques années de cela, mes envies de théatre m'avaient emmené vers une pièce d'Harold Pinter, "Trahisons" . L'intérêt ? C'était une histoire d'amour à 3 ( 2 hommes aiment la même femme) qui remonte le temps !! Mon premier soin avait été (comme d'habitude) une lecture à haute voix pour "sentir" l'histoire et le jeu de chacun et parler de la mise en scène ! Un éclairage "ombres et lumières" et les décors assez dépouillés ( cuisine, chambre..)quand on a pas beaucoup d'argent, il faut des idées !! Et une fois que tous ont été d'accord, créer un planning répétition qui tenait compte des dates de représentations, des disponibilités de chacun et du budget location salle, et de faire naitre une forte motivation. Le reste se passe sur scène

Le théatre ne doit pas uniquement être pensé dans sa dimension logistique. Il repose sur un réseau de pratiques à la fois universelles et particulières qui distinguent les cultures de longue date. C'est un outil de fraternisation essentiel aux sociétés qui est pourtant en perte de vitesse. Le fait d'aller au théatre a été restreint à une simple habitude sociale et a amené cette pratique à perdre en force, parce que le cinéma s'y est aussi substitué. Le théatre est pourtant un média différent de tous les autres qui permet de construire une relation à l'imaginaire et à l'engagement social et humain bien particulière. Il faut davantage l'inscrire dans les pratiques pédagogiques établies et favoriser sa généralisation dans l'espace public.

We’ve been doing this 4000 years. A series of rehearsal types have evolved. Not sure why this is anything new. Goals are clear: text/subtext analysis, lines, blocking, character, upgrades, staging, tech, dress. The rest depends on French Scenes and the time you have until opening night.

From my own experience I've learned that mainly the technical side (which is more and more important these days) tends to get rushed. This means less quality because attention to detail will suffer from this pressure. It should be treated just as a director finetuning one specific line of an actor. The magic is in the details.

French scene breakdown, then do a pattern analysis. Figure out in the first half of the rehearsal process what scenes can be lumped together. Rehearse like you shoot a film - out of order. Then halfway through put chunks together until acts are together. Plan backwards and always give yourself one "grub" day per type of rehearsal to catch up on items not finished. Always let a scene run thru once first before going back and directing it. let the actors experiment and keep what you like and through questions get them to change what you think doesnt fit.

Having experience in the production side of all manner of shows, clear and precise planning of every aspect of any production is crucial and of utmost importance. Most culprits who neglect this aspect include many independent producers/writers/content creators who somehow seem to believe that everything will automatically fall into place by magic or think that everyone else involved can read their mind, or become dictators whose planning systems serm to change with each passing breeze ... Be professional, respect your team and deal with everything professionally and everyone will not only respect you but be supportive and helpful.
