To be frank, I get reminders from my Apple Watch to stand - and that is when I take a break. I get up and walk for a minute or so. It gives me an opportunity to distance myself from the task I have 'tunnel-visioned' on, and believe it or not, thoughts start flowing more smoothly when I come back to it. This 1-2 mins break also gives me a chance to speak with my colleagues, connect with the admin staff at my office, and if we are all feeling lazy, blow off work for some more time and laugh about the stressful task we are currently obsessing over! Time blocking is not a new technique. In fact, we have all been conditioned to time block (cue: the timetables at school)! Why time blocking works for me is because I block time for 'ancillary gaps'. No, such a term does not exist for anybody but me; and now probably you! I always block extra time. For example, if it takes me 30 minutes to commute between home and office, I block 45 minutes. Sometimes, I might run late or may get stuck in unexpected traffic or, on a good day, may end up with 15 extra minutes to chat with my colleague before my day gains momentum. It is also very difficult to not feel guilty about maintaining your boundaries. However, the only way to protect yourself is by communicating honestly about your capacity. How I set boundaries: a. By being polite and sweet, but holding fast to my conviction. b. By offering an alternate time/day/option to carry out the task. c. By switching off my data access and putting my phone on DND. This helps in you reconnecting with yourself. Standing up for yourself - that feeling is unmatched.
