Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is one of the great tool that helps to assess the flow, identify bottlenecks and understand the areas of improvement.

What I had used to do is to set up a system to monitor the flow of a production line… we assign every part with a QR code. When the parts go through every station and worked, the workers will scan the QR code recording the part’s flow in the system. Same thing goes for Quality Inspection. All the stations and lines production and quality results recorded and displayed into a monitor for visual management. When we see a bottleneck or excess quality defects, we can zoom into the problem to identify the source of the problem. Of course in addition to that there’s also PFMEA to be done before we setup the production lines…

In my experience flow of material and value is paramount for smooth operation of a process. Doing line balancing so that the load at the subsequent work stations is closely balanced is one major step to enhance flow. Where there is imbalance, it usually manifest itself as long waiting time, high work-in-progress and reduced throughput.
