Here's how you can network effectively as a self-employed photographer.

Don't introduce yourself as a photographer because you will get lumped in with every other photographer, say what makes you different, if nothing you do is different than other photographers, you need to niche. You need to find a way that you can add value above just taking photographs. I introduce my self as helping solicitors showcase their talented people to help increase retention and engagement. Instantly recognisable and memorable and that says I add value because I am looking at how my photographs and ideas can add further value.

I did real estate/property photography for several years. I found all the property networking groups in my area and attended their events. I have quite a few clients doing this. If you cater to a certain business sector, find out what events are happening in your area and attend those. You must figure out where your potential clients hang out and meet them there. And the key to effective networking is to build relationships first. Don't go into selling mode until people know, like and trust you.

This has always helped me, a perfect example, if I'm at an event with a band or an activity happening I'll take photos of that and show then email respective individuals. This usually leads to show I have the power to add value to your already good act. Take initiative right away and give them a taste, this works much better than cold selling, or "visit my website/socials" because they'll never do that, in my experience at least.

Comment on the posts of the people you want to work with so they can get to know you, what you say communicates your values and beliefs, how you help other is a vital part of communicating what you do and the more you do this, the better people feel they know you and are more likely to hire you. Treat social media the same as networking and have conversations, real conversations with real people and you will build relationships.

As an event, band and concert photographer I will always tag everyone involved, somehow some way. This not only boosts your engagement, and shares and reposts organically but it boosts your profiles overall, and the algorithms will find you, plus the community will find you quicker. And it shows you're working where you say you are. This combined with keeping a consistent message throughout your posts is super helpful. Socials aren't everything, but they're a major part of the world we live in.

As editor in chief and representing media, events can be very helpful to meet some of the industries most important people. Events could not only lead to new work, but also get you connected to the one truly interested in your work?– getting featured in photography magazines or being able to tell your story to an audience might be a good start to broaden your reach. Collaborations could be the great start of something bigger, try to find the one suitable for you work and maybe you can get helt with the tools to go forward.

Follow up is EVERYTHING. I am dismayed at how many I talked to who never follow up. And don't just follow up to follow up, be sincere about your follow up, the relationship you're trying to cater. If you want good business opportunities, being sincere pays dividends for years to come.

Always follow up, even if you are not sure because a follow up will either confirm they are a goo prospect or confirm they are not, so a follow up is essential. If an event leads to no decent follow ups, review where you are networking and who is in the room because your time is valuable and not to be wasted.

Develop your brand as you grow and become better. Learn on the heels of jobs that are helping you grow. And really begin to notice your personal take on what you shoot, how you shoot, the messages you think about, the things you say.... Keep it simple too. I built my brand around a chicken, and it's been the best thing I ever did. Become the brand and the brand will become "you-biquitous."

Attend local events, exhibitions, and workshops where you can exchange ideas with other image enthusiasts. In doing so, you'll weave a network that not only values your work but also the stories you help tell.
