As a system architect, formulate the implementation plan by breaking down solution into workable, independent modules thereby reducing the risks. Before the start, always have the alternate options, roll back and backup options. Unexpected delays are inevitable and hence buy out the contingency ( in terms of time, cost and resources) from management in advance. Confirm that development staff has adjusted path and monitor progress.
