Agility and proactiveness will always help to sail through the unexpected tides. A project life cycle may have several instances wherein due to delay in any element may delay several other things lined up. It can be something as big as a potential design or philosophy change when you are in mid of completing your tasks or as small as a software or machine malfunctioning or unforeseen leave of dependable team member or something totally unpredictable like the COVID time putting entire team on WFH all of a sudden and restricting access to office resources. Strategy to proactively deal with such instances by fragmenting tasks & rotating resources for optimisation and also figuring out alternate and efficient ways of accomplishing goals help.

Expect change As a strategic communicator you should already have a pretty good view of the context and landscape you operate in. Especially in a world where ‘events’ seem to happen a little more than normal, it’s worth just having the B and C plan in the back pocket.

The only constant is change, and as communications professionals, we need to always adopt an agile mindset. This is where the strength of our relationships with key stakeholders across an organization is key. We need to be able to quickly assess the impact of change and identify who to work with to provide a viable workaround. My personal experience is that agility is normally (and perhaps conversely) best enabled when you have a solid Plan A to work from. Once you know what variables have changed from the agreed and preferred approach, you're in a much better position to pivot to Plan B - deadlines, dependencies etc. have all been mapped out and you can quickly assess the impact of changes/delays. Everything starts with a solid plan.
