In my opinion, I think that transitioning from a technical role to a business analyst role involves a few key steps as follows:- 1. Believing that you are able to change and adapt. 2. Understand the Role. 3. Acquire Business Analysis Skills. 4. Gain Domain Knowledge. 5. Highlight Transferable Skills. 6. Connect with professionals in the business analysis field through networking events. 7. Gain Experience: through expliote opportunities to work on projects.

Project management, agile framework, scrum master, business analyst, SQL, power bi, etc. certifications are available on Udemy, coursera, etc which are paid as well as free. I see that most of the BA professionals are certified from IIBA, pmp, CBAP to highlight their profile more. All these definitely helps us grow in the industry.

CBAP By IIBA of course could be a good choice, maybe the better. I would also like to mention here PMI-PBA of PMI. For those who wear the two hats (the "dinamic duo" PMP, PBA), this choice rappresent a natural transition/integration.

If you want to transition to a BA role, I'm not sure a certification is needed. Since many certifications require experience even to apply (CBAP or PMI-PBA as examples), would you have the necessary experience if you are transitioning? Some certifications, such as the ECBA or the CCBA from IIBA, show that you know the basics without experience. It may be more prudent to focus on the necessary skills that you need, such as elicitation skills, modeling, etc. Get some experience with those skills; volunteer at a local non-profit organization to build those skills and add that experience to your resume/LinkedIn profile. This shows practical experience.

I think there are several ways to dive deeper into the Business Analyst role. Firstly, you can start working on data from open-source databases. It will help understand the work that Business Analysts do and improve hard skills. Secondly, it could be a good idea to contact other Business Analysts and explore how they work with data. Thirdly, you can start taking the volunteer projects. That will help to know how the entire team works on a specific project.

From my experience, one of the most valuable aspects of transitioning to a BA role is learning to effectively communicate between technical teams and business stakeholders. By participating in projects that require this kind of interaction, you develop the ability to translate complex technical information into terms that non-technical stakeholders can understand. Your supervisor may offer advice on how to transition smoothly and can also inform you of potential opportunities within the company you work for and help you apply. Consider your relationship with your supervisor before approaching them with your career change questions.

It is again an important step to follow the leaders in industry and connect with other peers to gain the insights and challenges of your role and how to deal with it. This opens up a new vertical apart from the experience you gain in your organisation.

Building a robust professional network can provide support and open doors to new opportunities. I actively participated in industry forums, attended conferences, and joined professional associations, which helped me connect with experienced Business Analysts and potential mentors.

When I started as a Business Analyst, I struggled to make an impact. My writings were too long, and nobody paid attention. Over time, I learned that brevity and clarity are key. As a Business Analyst, you’re really the bridge between the client and the technical team, and each of them speaks their own language. So, it's all about knowing who you're talking to and adjusting your communication style. You need to break down technical stuff in a way that makes sense to the business side, and at the same time, help the technical team understand the business needs. Plus, listening is key—really understanding what both sides want is a big part of gathering requirements and keeping everyone on the same page.

Effective communication is essential for every successful Business analyst. Strong communication skills enable business analysts to understand stakeholders needs ,translate requirements, encourage cooperation, manage change, and increase stakeholders participation.

Like all roles, BAs have evolved too with the evolution of available technologies. A BA of two decades ago relied significantly more on in-person communication as opposed to remote ways today. Further, tools of today allow for data capture more easily but call for your acumen to frame the right questions, decide the right fields, etc. Client systems are technically more advanced today and as a BA you may be required to orient yourself first with what is available as documentation or how their systems run before you dive into a project headfirst. All these changes require BAs today to be more open to change and not rely solely on existing knowledge or certifications. [These are my personal views]
