Industry 4.0 is primarily data driven, that leads to smart decision making and metric management. From my own experience in the high precision, high volume semiconductor and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries, it is evident that indicators as OEE and cycle time have access to a wider and deeper database, improving not just informed decision making, but also insights into cyclic variations and outliers in the process and equipment paradigms. Larger upstream and downstream process and metrology data better feed statistical process control interfaces and enables smarter automated process control. Capturing and validating all available and relevant data is key.

Working for the manufacturing sectors over the past few decades, I have experienced, first hand, the positive outcomes of being truthful and ethical in collecting data and feeding the same to the database. Data integrity is better addressed through consentual data collection and dissemination to the AI or DSS (decision support) interfaces. For example, fail points in a process control chart need to be bravely saved and not manipulated or invalidated, every time it happens. I have come accross individuals who have done this and impacted both process and products, effectively projecting a false baseline to the process mean. Products eventually failed downstream checks and balances and were rejected. Keep an eye out for this, please.

Do not rush in adopting new technology. Assess carefully the benefits and costs of new technology in your projects. It might be too costly to try to adopt new technology that is not mature yet.
