As someone who has both had to answer to others, and been in leadership positions it is crucial to recognize that by definition improvement means something is going to change. Albeit for the better, but it will change nevertheless. As leaders if we fear the unknown, become complacent and comfortable with the status quo, or happy to stick to “how we’ve always done it” we will never achieve the results we seek because we are unwilling to allow the necessary change to occur. Change is unavoidable in a dynamic and thriving environment. We must all embrace it, listen to new ideas, and be willing to “break things” in order to grow.

Anyone can tell people what to do, but to properly delegate and provide direction our teams/stakeholders/etc. need to understand WHY we do what we do, what effect it has on the big picture, and what it means for them specifically. This ensures the team stays engaged, stakeholders stay bought in, and everyone works together to achieve a shared vision.

This is exactly what you will face without investing in your people. Everyone wants to do well, and when given the opportunity they will rise to the occasion. When a team member feels their contributions go unnoticed and they are denied opportunities to learn and grow they will find an environment where they can and you will be faced with increasing turnover.
