GIS in database has it's own module and query style, and available to mostly production grade databases. and this is already improved a lot in this 15 years. Many already seen GIS implementation in many business area, since it's connecting the real world. and Image without GIS information embedded seems useless now.

20-15 years ago geospatial data very depended on limited source of satellite imagery and trusted survey institution. But now, scoped source of data can provided by anyone, e.g a lot of drone provider can provide GIS imagery for limited scope of area. and this should be sufficient for business usage.

Everyday a new data source shows up so it is important to keep updated by reading and testing new sources with a sense of criticism. Think how the data can help you besides what it was designed for.

In my 25 years of experience, I've regularly switched technologies. While having a strong technical and academic foundation is crucial for understanding various GIS components, adaptability is equally important. Currently GIS technology depends on business use case for it's development. Public service GIS still not interesting in ROI point of view. But every government, should have their own GIS system as their source of truth, not depending on private geospatial data provider, (like google/apple/microsoft).
