The oil and gas industry has multiple skill sets and disciplines working in tandem and not only engineering. Traditionally the industry has been structured in two broad ways. One the exploration side we have what is called the upstream industry and then on the distribution side we have what is called the downstream industry. Some skills cut across both spectrums. Skills like finance, project management and engineering are required in both spectra. In the upstream space certain technical skills like geological sciences, petroleum engineering, mining engineering are prevalent. In the downstream space then you begin to see mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, marketing, supply and distribution as you go down to the retail businesses.

Getting a degree in O&G might be less valuable in the coming 10 years since most workers in the O&G industry do not actually have a degree in O&G. However, if you are passionate about O&G, you can get a degree in chemical or industrial engineering and then take some courses related to the industry. Keep in mind that petroleum engineers have more advantages in the O&G industry than in other sectors.
