During my penetration tests, I have uncovered a variety of vulnerabilities, ranging from common to complex. SQL injection vulnerabilities, for example, have allowed unauthorized access to databases, enabling attackers to retrieve, modify, or delete sensitive information. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities have exposed users to malicious scripts, potentially leading to data theft or session hijacking. Buffer overflow issues have posed serious risks, as they can be exploited to execute arbitrary code or crash systems. For SQL injection, I advised implementing parameterized queries and input validation. To mitigate XSS, I recommended encoding output and enforcing strict content security policies.

I was so nervous on an interview, when they asked me what SQL injection was, I froze for a minute. Thankfully, I remembered the answer (and I also wasn't applying for a web app security position). Be sure to be able to describe, in-depth and at the same time in simple terms, each vulnerability that appears within your report. Be able to communicate the risk associated with the vulnerability, how that risk can be addressed and what could potentially happen if it isn't. When it comes to communicating risk, be sure to properly classify the risk level (e.g., critical, high, medium, low) with each vulnerability to help clients understand which issues to address first. Focus on prioritization for remediation for a quick win!

The most challenging aspect of penetration testing for pentesters can be working directly with the clients. Most pentesters are very technical but might not have the soft skills required to be successful when interacting with clients. Unfortunately, many pentesters don't see the need for soft skills such as the ability to establish the rules of the engagement with the client, prepare a Final Findings Report or deliver it in a presentation for executive leadership.
