When receiving feedback about your work in a Copywriting project, you have to ensure that you listen with a mood that is neutral. An objective listener is not going to be affected by emotion. Whereas, an emotional listener will most likely receive feedbacks in an unprogressive manner. In conclusion, watching your mood is really important as you go through the feedback discussion.

Also, imagine if you were client, what would have been your feedback? 2. Remember, client has given the feedback of 'your work' not yours. 3. Ask questions to understand the client's concern, and try to resolve it. 4. Offer an alternative solution to client and Ask if he/ she is satisfied? 5. Take the Feedback as an advice to improve your product/ service. 6. Try to get on a mutual agreement. But in case if it is not achieved, ensure the client that you have considered their Feedback as an advice, Thank them, ensure you'll offer better solutions in future.

Everyone is different with different perspectives and preferences. It's not about forcing your opinions on others and deciding you're right. Acknowledge what you agree on while respectfully addressing any concerns or differences that exist.

Let's assume for the sake of argument that a piece is being panned to the point of questioning its need to exist. In this situation, the writer needs to come back with questions asking the feedback giver to be as specific as possible, which can end up blunting some of the major barbs and leading to a productive discussion of next steps.

She was asking questions to get clarity when the Senior Teacher cut her off. The Senior Teacher very abruptly stated what was going on in an abrasive and impatient tone. The teacher responded in like manner and the meeting went downhill. In a clarity session it's important not to attack the person seeking clarity. Be respectful and patient when people seek clarity about their work.

Ask specifically, please! Clear questions ensure you're addressing the right things. Imagine someone says, “the copy feels weak.” Asking “Can you elaborate on what feels weak - the message or the specific wording?” gets you a more focused response.

This collaborative approach not only clarifies the feedback but also fosters a shared understanding and ownership of the changes. It is really difficult to be objective with one's work, but it is an essential part of being able to obtain useful feedback. Likewise, as someone who offers feedback, from my point of view, it is as important to focus on improvements as on successes. There are people who believe that offering negative feedback makes them smarter or more specialized, and that is not the case. It's easy to get defensive, but I stay objective. Instead of focusing on who's right, I focus on the copy itself. I analyse the feedback to see if there are points that strengthen the message. By approaching the discussion with an open mind, we can find a solution that improves the overall copy.

While it's important to also listen closely and ask for clarification, sometimes there's an additional disconnect when the reviewer doesn't fully grasp your intent or realize that some details/wording in your copy were included for a very relevant reason. Offering alternatives to their feedback gives you the opportunity to explain your original intent while also incorporating any of their suggestions that complement it.

By offering options that address concerns, you're more likely to gain the reviewer's buy-in for the final copy. They feel their feedback was heard and considered. Create alternatives that mold into both perspectives to create solutions.

Clients generally know what they want and though you have a clear understanding of the core of the message, there's a chance you might be missing some key elements in your copy. What better way to get to the bottom of it than getting feedback? By getting feedback, you're able to better understand how a refinement of approach can help your copy align with the client's needs while still retaining the core message(s) of your copy.

Aiming for consensus doesn't necessarily mean you have to sacrifice your creative vision at the altar of compromise. Instead, it's a delicate balance between incorporating feedback and staying true to your creative integrity. When giving or receiving feedback in copywriting, it's important to remember that it's not a personal attack but rather a necessary aspect of doing business. So, keep your cool and listen. A hothead writes lousy copy. Also, ditch the ego. If the client isn't buying what you're selling, figure out why while clarifying why your choices are important. But sometimes, you have to be flexible and adjust to the situation. Know when to stand firm and when flexibility might be a better option. Always aim for a win-win; after all, you're both in this together.

As a contract copywriter, I left it up to the client liaison to corral all the feedback and internally discuss a bottom line on the copy.
