As an ML engineer, I have learned that understanding business needs is often more crucial than deploying the most sophisticated algorithms. In one of my projects for the healthcare sector, rather than using cutting-edge techniques, I focused on implementing basic models that addressed specific client pain points, such as reducing patient wait times and improving resource allocation. First, you need to reach out whether on the internet or in-person (e.g., via events or other connections) to professionals in the field. Ask smart questions and have nice discussions. Second, you want such people to be impressed that they can recommend you with confidence. Ensure your soft skills are up to the standards and put time in thinking/working on projects that help in this. Be action-oriented.
