Here's how you can motivate and engage your students using effective teaching strategies.

In my opinion, the best way to teach the current generation of learners, whether they are children or adults, is to engage their critical thinking and encourage them to express their opinions. This approach helps them absorb the material more effectively and apply it in their own unique way, leading to a sense of ownership over their learning journey. Topics should be relevant and allow for diverse perspectives to flourish. In my 10+ years of teaching, I have observed that when students are given the freedom to express themselves, even on controversial topics, they become more engaged and learn all aspects of the language more efficiently, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and listening.

Focus on student interests and relevant curriculum. Students want to know what's happening in the world around them, and how this new knowledge pertains to them. If you focus on real-world problems students will have a greater connection. On top of making the learning relevant students need to fell they are in a safe space where their opinions matter, which comes down to the climate the teacher creates.

Make it fun and make it relevant! I had one student who was lacking in confidence in project management; they told me they worked as a night manager in a pizza* restaurant arranging deliveries. I asked if they sent the delivery out immediately it became ready. They told me no, because other orders might come in and they wanted to plan a route for the driver for efficient use of time and fuel. When I explained they were already implementing some project management principles, the response was so rewarding — they joy that they were doing this already and that it made sense provided a real boost to their confidence. (* of course, this also applies to other delivery services. Is there one for chocolate cake…? ??)

The best curriculum and pedagogy in the world don't matter unless you are able to build positive, respectful, and productive relationships with your students. No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care, and this is absolutely true of students. You will always get the best from your students when you show an interest in them as a person and learner, and utilise this knowledge to teach the person, not the program/curriculum. Teaching is a relationships game, pure and simple.

I have found that incorporating an art form into education engages students, helps with project-based learning, and makes education fun. Infusing the arts teaches critical thinking, helps teamwork, and gives learners positive career skills.

It would help if you did not neglect culturally responsive teaching. Work to see your students' culture as a strength and needed element in your classroom. As Zaretta Hammond tells us, we must use collectivist principles in our classroom organization. Ask yourself if the way your classroom functions centers you and your comforts/strengths or your students.

I have found group work/discussion very helpful even in my teaching of languages more especially continuous/creative/composition writing. When learners brainstorm content and language as a group, they greatly help one another to be the best. On the other hand, the teacher's marking load is reduced. If the feedback is verbal/oral the teacher simply calls the group and gives the feedback at once than dealing with an individual.

Schoology helps me guide my math students, not just grade them. I give detailed feedback directly on assignments, pinpointing areas for improvement. It's like having a virtual conversation on their work! Plus, I encourage "rough drafts." Students can submit work, get feedback through Schoology, and resubmit with corrections. This lets them learn from mistakes and improve, making our LMS a tool for growth, not just evaluation.

As a teacher, I see feedback as an indispensable tool. For me, the beauty lies in its simplicity - a brief note or a sticker can make a significant impact. These small gestures can convey both praise and constructive guidance. For my younger students, I use fun stamps and stickers with simple messages like 'This is brilliant!', 'Awesome!', or "Let's work on this.' Regular and targeted feedback can significantly boost students' confidence and motivation to excel, leading to remarkable progress.

A well crafted feedback loop is an antidote for creating a positive learning environment for adults and children. One must be careful not to create a learner-revolt loop by focusing entirely on the learner weaknesses. Human beings naturally and, by reflex action, respond negatively to non-constructive criticism, and this can entirely reverse the gains in the learning process. An integrated Learner Feedback Mechanism(ILFM) is most appropriate in conveying feedback to learners. But what does it involve? It involves first identifying learners' strengths and articulating them in the simplest way possible, and with the most possible clear way out. Third phase involves addressing the shortfalls .Third phase, collect and analyze learner feedback.

Real-world examples in teaching allow students to see connections between the various subjects they learn at school, among other things. Learning tends to be compartimentalized, and if students don't or can't see cross-disciplinary applications, it cannot happen at its full potential. Real-world experiences not only open students' minds to other possibilities (heightening their curiosity), but it also fleshes out concepts that are too one-dimensional on a whiteboard, or too abstract to conceive. Projects can serve this purpose very well on a larger scale. On a smaller scale, sets of problems where the concept is introduced in various scenarios are helpful and interesting in that regard.

Using the K from VKAT learning method proves beneficial for the students because there’s “action” involved. For example, using doors, table edges etc to find angles in Math or going out and collecting leaves to study venation patterns, flowers to study pollination etc. When a child is able to see “concrete” he can move towards the next step of understanding “abstract” and cement it in their memory.

One of the most effective ways to empower young people is to allow them to express their knowing through the arts. Arts integrative techniques allow students to demonstrate their understanding through tangible ways that can be explored and experienced by a broader audience (parents, families, communities, peers). Helping students embrace the identity of “artist as learner” and “artist as teacher” provides the opportunity for their unique perspectives to take flight.

Empowerment through choice: Always allow students as much choice as possible when choosing the medium in which they will learn content and the product in which they will produce, or even in the specific topic they are researching. This will build confidence and autonomy in the classroom and make them "accept" the non choices easier later.

One of the best things I find in IB curriculum is the way of conducting formative/ summative assessments. They were never a typical paper pen worksheet. Students were given the choice to choose in what form they want to express their learning- role play, 3D models, story narration, Project etc. At the end of the day, it is the understanding of the concept that matters and not merely the ability to write spoon fed answers in worksheets

When testing interpersonal or presentational speaking, I often give the students a choice between two or three topics. The vocabulary and/or grammar focus is the same but the topic is a choice.

An effective and curiosity-inducing hook can really ignite an engaging and fruitful lesson, where children are motivated and engaged, provided the lesson continues to ignite curiosity throughout.

Open ended questions foster thought and curiosity. I've had some great class and one on one discussions with students. We need to use this powerful strategy to foster lifelong learning as we are challenged to educate generations that have lost that love.

Here the role of an educator would be more of a facilitator tapping the thought process of pupils with cues and questionnaire guiding and channelising them to access appropriate child-centric and user-friendly books and websites. Gradually, motivating and encouraging every learner to adapt the quality of being independent, build self-confidence and enabling them for effective presentation skill.

The most effective solution to motivate and engage students in your class is to implement STEAM education. STEAM education is a combined approach to teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics through real-world applications in fields like Robotics, Coding and Artificial Intelligence. When students learn the concepts through applications in different projects it not only makes them motivated and engaged, but it also cultivates curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, computational thinking and problem-solving abilities in them. Also it generates the love for all the subjects in them rather than being specialized for only one subject.Implementing STEAM Education is the need of 21st century to make students future-ready.

This strategy might not be on a list of “effective teaching strategies”, but after 35+ years in education, I can tell you this strategy is integral….building relationships. When students know you care about them, they are more than likely to work harder in your classroom. #RelationshipsMatter
