Following graduation, I started working for a data consultant, handling various clientele and utilizing Tableau, Power BI, and Alteryx, among other data analytics technologies. There are many certifications and courses that can be completed online to learn such tools but this is different from having on the job experience, where projects are more ambiguous and use real, large data sets. As mentioned, internships give you the chance to start building up your portfolio to demonstrate your unique skills set and experience. Many people can hold the same academic credentials and have a similar skills set but real-world projects can add a competitive edge to future job applications, particularly in the current UK job market. To support with building out your portfolio, it can be useful to outline your goals for an internship to a line manager at the start, so they can help with assigning projects of interests that would advance your learning and be impactful for the business!

Another benefit to consider is adaptability. As mentioned in previous sections, participating in multiple data analytics internships gives you exposure to a range of tools. Many of the skills gained when learning these tools and techniques are transferable to other tools which can make you "Adept and Adapting". One example from my experience is using Tableau and Power BI. I had received training in Tableau and had lots of experience using the tool. I then worked for a client that used Power BI, which I wasn't very familiar with. However, by having Tableau under my professional belt, I was able to apply some concepts and logic to pick up Power BI very quickly, well enough to support other staff with their training and learning of the tool!
