This needs structure & strategy. Design reviews should be carefully orchestrated for when integration between designs is needed. Then do rapid experiments in between, per my comment in point #7. Avoid long boring meetings, get people out where the action is, show & tell, & guide the discussions with intent & strategy. I always include the operators and ask for their observations and suggestions. If they have an idea that sounds like it might work I will include it. This gives them a sense of ownership. If it works, great. If not we chalk it up to experience.

“Ask me & I’ll tell you something, show me & I’ll try something, let me use it & you’ll learn something.” Surveys, talking, etc., have their place, but until you give the user something they can try, it’s all theory or minimal learning. As fast as possible, get something usable into the hands of your early adopter customers or operators & WATCH what happens. Biggest Mistake: Not Doing Rapid Experiments. A well-known example in photography shows this: students tasked with taking 100 quick photos produced better results than those aiming for a single perfect shot. Engineers & project mgrs often go for “the perfect design” without frequent input from operators & other stakeholders. I’ve seen this dozens of times in my career. Rapid prototyping allows for quick, iterative improvements, leading to higher quality & faster market entry. In contrast, the usual “perfect shot” approach causes delays & extensive design rework. How? Cardboard mock-ups, 3D printing, minimal software demos, etc are all viable strategies. Design to “the next learning moment” vs the next design review & you’ll shine! ??
