Our lived experiences shape our beliefs and actions with no 2 people having the same path. When meeting with a mentor or colleague, I find it insightful to learn a bit about their origin story. Asking them questions like: What made you choose this career? What surprised you about this industry/job/company? How did that experience influence your next move? These thoughtful questions invite a deeper conversation to help understand motivations and beliefs that influence action. It's interesting to learn how people choose to do what they do. I would much rather spend time learning about what and how they make decisions than the outcome of those decisions. I also find that you will stand out for the interesting and insightful conversation.
