To excel in information security and cyber security, it is definitely the basis of knowledge and complete mastery of the main and basic topics in how to exchange and store information. This can help us a lot in recognizing and suggesting ways to protect data and its security. If you do not have accurate information about a subject, you cannot maintain its security. Also, being up-to-date and having new information can create an advantage.

Cybersecurity is all about keep updating to the latest threats and technologies that are being bought on to the table. Definitely, one needs to have thorough understanding on the core system functionality and how the threats will hit the systems leveraging some of the system resources. Yes yes yes and more yes on the soft skills. Of course you need to have the technical knowledge to do your job, but cybersecurity is a lot more than sitting behind a computer. Communicating findings, assessments and reviews, meetings with primary stakeholders and supporting teams require that you can communicate issues, needs, findings, or new concepts. Beyond clear communication, patience and tenacity are important. You may be in an environment where you are trying to implement new technologies or policies in your environment and helping your organization understand their importance take a variety of soft skills and finesse.

Two critical areas that haven't come up in this advice yet are report writing and employee education. Even if you're in a highly technical position you're going to be called on to report to leadership or clients. A career in cybersecurity isn't all sitting in a hoodie attacking systems, there is a lot of writing and administration to ensure that your work is properly documented and can be used to reduce risk in your organization or for your clients. If you can't communicate your findings and expertise it can't be used. Regarding employee education and staff awareness there is a whole branch of cybersecurity in specializing in education and soft skills so you can educate people. There are career paths for less technical people who can teach.
