Timing is a crucial component in delivering impactful feedback in leadership development coaching. To ensure your message resonates and spurs growth, aim to provide feedback as close to the relevant event as possible, when details are fresh in everyone's mind. However, be mindful of the emotional state of the person receiving the feedback. If they seem stressed or upset, exercise discretion and choose a more appropriate moment. Navigating timing wisely increases the likelihood of a receptive and thoughtful response, fostering a more productive coaching relationship.

Clarify intent right at the beginning - for yourself and the person receiving feedback. Your role is to help the person or further a business outcome, it's not to teach or show superiority.

I think the skill most overlooked when learning to give feedback is active listening. So many times we get so caught up in how we think the conversation will go or what words to say to make the feedback not feel so bad, we don't really listen during the conversation for cues that we are communicating effectively and understanding the perspective of the person we are giving feedback to. We miss the why and the chance to learn more about the root cause of situations.

I really like to think about this as a feedforward, instead of feedback. Feedforward brings implicitly this idea that we are looking to improve in the future, not to judge the past! I always close a feedforward opportunity with a test that can be putted in place next time that a similar situation comes up! For example, once I gave a feedforward on how to improve the impact of a colleague's pitch. After helping her to see that her pitch misses a couple of concrete examples to make it easier to the audience to understand, I asked her -> how can you test this next time? She says that she had a presentation to make next week, and that she would include examples on it. She is now a CEO of a middle size company and a great public speaker ????

Giving feedback is more of an art than it is a practice! A couple of months ago, I received feedback that was (1) a Slack message (2) was 3 weeks after the request (3) almost entirely negative (4) missed key details of the situation. I believe the SBI Model (Situation-Behaviour-Impact) enables effective feedback discussions: 1. SITUATION: Clearly describe the context of the feedback. 2. BEHAVIOUR: Focus on the specific behaviour observed. 3. IMPACT: Explain the effect of this behaviour. In following this model, ensure that you: - Be specific and objective (do not generalise) - Be constructive and positive (balance negative with positive) - Be empathetic (understand their perspective) - Follow-up (check in later to discuss progress)
