I conducted research seeking to understand the link between strategy gaming and gains in academic development and discovered a means of mitigating educational loss from the effects of poverty through the shared, social, directed meta cognitive skill building inherent in strategy board games. This led to initiatives, partnerships, fun times, and job offers. What passions of yours might be turned into an educational expertise that professional team members might gain real academic skills and strategies from?

Without overloading the interview committee, simply be ready to share what others found really great about you having led an initiative, and provide the interviewers with a tangible, physical item to exemplify that expertise.

An entrepreneurial spirit can set you apart from others in the field, especially by being solution-focused. Embrace an abundance mindset and believe that there are plenty of opportunities out there, and more will come from success and growth. This mindset will encourage you to take more risks, seize more opportunities, and believe in the potential for positive outcomes, which is essential for career growth.

Sometimes, employers are looking for fresh ideas and out-of-the-box thinking. If you have experience with new and unique ideas and innovations this is your chance to shine. Know that you will not be for everyone, and that there are many in education who are looking for tried and true and new versions of programs or products that are familiar and comfortable. That's okay, and you may not be for everyone. Don't let that stop you. Continue to share your ideas for problem solving in fresh new ways. Remember that it worked for Apple, who successfully marketed to those who "Think different."

I love informational interviews! People love talking about their jobs, and it’s a terrific, inexpensive way to learn about roles that might interest you. Commit the time to learn about the various roles in higher education, while expanding your network at the same time!

While the other points are great, consider this: schools are full of challenges! Show future employers you're a problem-solver who thrives in a team environment. Problem-Solving: Think of a real-world situation you faced (maybe during an internship) and how you tackled it. Did you brainstorm solutions with others? Did you use data to make a decision? Collaboration: Highlight instances where you worked effectively with a team. Did you lead a project? Did you mediate a disagreement to reach a common goal? By showcasing these skills, you show you're not just someone who wants to be a leader, but someone who can actively improve the school environment by working with others.
