I remember the first time I was introduced to Agile I had a very strict scrum master, and she would make us put money in a jar each time someone exceeds their allotted time in our daily stand-up and then she would buy us coffee at the end of each sprint using the money from this jar. While the term “Agile” is often associated with flexibility, it’s essential to recognize that it also requires elements of strictness and resource management.

In my opinion, one would do well to bear one overarching thought in following Agile (or another process). It is the thought that the deliverables trump process, in that, one must not be afraid to tweak the process to ensure that on-time and high quality products are the end goal- not the religious following of a process that is merely a means to an end.

As a more experienced engineer you should be more comfortable talking to teams from other disciplines as well as business stakeholders. Organising and charing meetings, calls etc. between teams to get those conversations going. Offer to be the note taker or follow up on actions as approrpriate.

Most importantly, don’t “hold court” with this type of leadership: if someone makes a decision you don’t agree with that won’t cause a high dollar mistake… let it happen. It's important to understand that Agile methodologies should not allow leadership and business to continuously pivot and move targets and Sprint goals for the product team. In my experience, the term "agile mindset" has been used to repeatedly change the scope of the sprint once the sprint has already started. Over time, this demotivates the team and causes the engineers to lose trust in the sprint planning ceremony.

Agile requires a lot of trust and empowerment from leadership. Most companies "practice Agile" by slapping Agile's names onto their existing meetings, job titles, etc.
