Prior to gathering data, it is a good practice to first succinctly define the problem (problem statement) needing solution. The problem statement should cover the team(s)/business operation(s) impacted by the issue, ways the team(s)/operations are being affected, areas of occurrence and its impact in terms of revenue, productivity, operations, or production. Having a clear and concise problem statement helps in driving root cause analysis, a vital part of coming up with a desirable solution. With a clear and concise problem statement, we are now equipped to gather data relevant to the scope of the problem statement.
