An example of this would be when I faced a set back in CA Final exams. Instead of blaming myself or institute, I followed the following ways: 1. Focused on past mistakes Eg., not giving required time to subjects which were difficult for me. I had just divided time equally irrespective of the difficulty level or the length of the syllabus. 2. Reasons for such mistake: Under confidence and why? Followed many strategies based on multiple peoples opinions. 3. How to improve: Checked my answer sheets to note the silly mistakes I made in questions I was confident. Way forward: Prepared a complete new strategy based on my above reflections. Result: Made through all 8 papers in next attempt with two months of preparation.

In my experience, the best way to keep a positive outlook after a setback in your accounting career is to take time off if you can afford to and take care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Meditation, exercise, and a balanced diet should, therefore, be a staple.

Maintaining my balance is a very important part so that I can think about what is coming effectively so that frustration does not creep in. Mental health is very important in these times and trying to spend time with those we love is very important in these circumstances.

I think keeping your life in balance is huge. I certainly made career sacrifices but I do not regret all the family time I was able to have. Make sure the people that are important in your life, you are spending time with. And when you have some family things that you don’t love doing, I changed my attitude to I “get” to do these things vs I “have” to do these things.

You must self-discipline in this aspect. Not just your mindset, your mental well-being also affects your body. Do your hobbies or spending with your loved one is a good way for stress relief.

The best way to describe this is with accounting terminology. We debit what we get and we credit what we owe. When crediting a mistake creating an accounting setback in our life, it’s vital that we offset the present by debiting what we got by the way of lessons learned so that they can positively transition to the past without pessimistically predicting our future. Without balancing out our successes and struggles, we risk accounting success for pride and struggles for pain. Every step back should counteract with 2 step ups. 1 for reflection and 1 for redemption. This pushes us forward a little further than before because of that valuable lesson learned. I thought I was very change oriented but the biggest setback in my career after a lifetime taught me a valuable lesson. Do not compromise on your values. Find out what is most important and inspiring to you and follow your heart. It is had to make life changing decisions even if change is part of your life. It was hard and rewarding at the same time. My career is much more rewarding on a different level. Occasionally doubts will arise but easier to accept since doing what I love to do.

Once you’re able to determine what you’re working towards, take your experience and what you’ve learned and find areas of continued learning and personal/professional growth to set you on the trajectory that you want to be on.
