Innovation and creativity don’t really mesh with the concept of failure—it’s more about perspective. Legendary Marvel comic book writer Stan Lee put it best when he said about his ideas, 'If you've got an idea that you genuinely think is good, don't let some idiot talk you out of it.' But it’s important to remember his follow-up too: 'But that doesn’t mean that every wild notion you come up with is genius.' This tells us a lot about how to learn from what doesn’t work out. Basically, every attempt, whether successful or not, teaches us something valuable. That's how we grow and get better in creativity and innovation

En la medida que entiendas que el éxito es un camino que debes construir sobre tus fracasos, sobre tus errores, y que mientras aprendas a reconocerlos y a aprender de ellos estarás avanzando hacia tu destino sufrirás menos en tu proceso hacia el éxito.

Seek failure. Ask for failure. If you fail, it means you're active. It means you're taking action. It means you turn an idea into reality. Write down the points that failed and keep them in mind for the next time. If you fail, it means you're doing something good. You're in the right way to find what's best for you and what works best for you. Keep going!

I spend a large amount of time analyzing my outcomes. Hard and soft edges, value, and contrast can truly make or break a painting. Each peice comes with its own obstacles. There is something somewhere that can be improved upon, taking the time to analyze how the project went, taking note of the method’s effectiveness, where the drawbacks happened, and what may be needed moving forward deepens learning and increases impact.

One of my favorite examples of resilience in innovation is the story behind the invention of the Post-it note. Back in 1968, Dr. Spencer Silver, a scientist at 3M, was attempting to create a super-strong adhesive. Instead, he accidentally developed a low-tack, reusable adhesive that stuck lightly to surfaces but didn’t bond tightly. Initially, this 'failure' seemed like a dead end. But Silver saw potential in his invention. It wasn't until 1974 that his colleague, Art Fry, had a "eureka" moment. Fry, frustrated with bookmarks that kept falling out of his book, realized Silver's adhesive could create a reusable, sticky bookmark. This idea evolved into the Post-it note we know and love today!

Embrace a rapid iteration process where you quickly test, evaluate, and refine your ideas. This approach minimizes the impact of failures and accelerates learning. Frequent iterations help you stay agile and responsive to changes, driving innovation forward.

Tell the story of why something failed. "This was an attempt to X. When Y happened, we decided to pivot to Z." Make sure that quick iterations are truly iterations and not just discarding something that is underdone or not quite mature enough to bear fruit. For example, I led a team that put on a specific type of event. After three different ways of marketing and executing this event, we still couldn't effectively get people to attend. There seemed to be no interest. The iterations were quick, but the ultimate iteration (to not do the event at all) took some time to work through, and we knew that we had given it the best we had and that there was simply no demand for that type of event.

Innovators who prioritize ideas with high potential for downstream improvement and speed up the iterative cycles in between models (think Tesla, NVIDIA) will lap their competition and bring enormous value to their shareholders. At a trade show last year, I asked several manufacturers in my industry what products they would be showcasing in this year's show. Some pointed to minor improvements on their latest products, raising the question of why they rushed to market with an almost-there product! The most convincing innovation roadmaps were those starting with a relevant problem, a novel solution in beta testing, and the promise of new questions or doors (even markets) that could be unlocked by the introduction of the new product.

Enamórate del problema no de la solución, es decir no insistas cuando las cosas no funcionan, prueba nuevas soluciones en función a la retroalimentación que te den tus clientes. Recuerda que no se trata de ti sino de tu cliente y que tu producto solo tiene valor en tanto y en cuanto satisface una necesidad que tiene tu cliente, proporciona una alegría buscada o alivia una frustración crítica o elimina un riesgo asociado.

This is so hard. Even if we like to change and grow, the emotional effects of change can be overwhelming. Remember that you are a worthy human no matter how hard the change seems. Try to reframe any negative inner thoughts into positive verbal statements.

Accept that change is a constant in the creative and innovative journey. Stay adaptable and open to new ideas and approaches. Embracing change allows you to pivot when necessary and take advantage of emerging opportunities, fostering sustained innovation.

Se humilde, recuerda que no eres due?o de la verdad... recuerda que las necesidades cambian en el tiempo aspira como cambian los perfiles de nuestros clientes, y que si ellos cambian nosotros tenemos que estar dispuestos a hacer lo mismo a fin de seguir a su lado.

Cuando te equivoques o fracases tomate el tiempo -antes de volver a iterar- en encontrar la causa raíz del fracaso. Cuando obtengas éxito en tu innovación recuerda que el éxito es pasajero, no te quedes en tu zona de confort, sigue buscando nuevas soluciones y compáralas. Busca hacer obsoleto tu nuevo desarrollo. Recuerda que si hay una certeza en éste mundo es que tarde o temprano una disrupción afectará el sector en el que te encuentras y que la única forma de que no te afecte es que seas tu el que la genere.
