Here's how you can juggle continuing education and a full-time job in operational planning.

One thing I’ve learned is to make sure you read through all of the requirements for the credit or course a couple of times before you start the program. I then add everything to my calendar with deadlines and reminders to make sure I don’t miss anything. A friend of mine recently told me about a class they are in that reminded me why I do this. The instructor, for unknown reasons, listed the course assignments throughout the syllabus instead of listing them in one section. If they didn’t read the complete syllabus with a fine tooth comb, they would have missed a major part of the assigned work and failed the course. Always make sure you know what the requirements are, have time to complete the work and it is relevant for your career.

First, I assess the urgency and importance of each task, categorizing them based on deadlines and their impact on my goals. I utilize time management techniques like the Eisenhower Matrix, which helps distinguish between what is urgent and what is essential. By breaking larger projects into manageable steps, I can allocate specific time blocks for studying without overwhelming my work schedule. Regularly reviewing and adjusting priorities ensures that I remain aligned with both my educational objectives and professional responsibilities, allowing me to achieve a sustainable balance between the two.

This is key. You need to treat any training like a 2nd job or life will get in the way. By creating time in your schedule, you are telling yourself and anyone else you share your schedule with that this is a priority. You will take the time to get the course completed. If you are Neurodivergent, having it on your schedule means you won’t forget about it. It’s harder to sit down and do a little each day but you’ll know how much time you need to binge, I mean spend, to get it done before the deadline. ?? As an Executive Assistant, I’m excellent at doing this for my clients but I’m just starting to schedule it for myself. It’s a game changer.

I’m a huge believer in work smarter not harder. If there is a better way to achieve the objective, I’m all for it. However, not all processes can be streamlined more. In the quest to become more efficient, make sure you are not cutting critical steps in the process. Another important aspect is to not spend too much time searching for ways to reduce the workload that you are no longer productive. I can get lost down a rabbit hole of technological innovation that has the potential to automate my tasks. But if I’m not putting them into practice because I spent all my time researching, then I’ve actually become unproductive. The internet is a double edged sword. Be careful of the edge.

These can be applied to your studies, enhancing your understanding and retention of new concepts. Schedule dedicated time for learning, ensuring it aligns with your work responsibilities. Engaging in practical projects at work that relate to your studies can reinforce your learning while demonstrating your initiative. Additionally, collaborate with colleagues to share knowledge, which can enrich both your education and professional environment, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

This is very valuable information. You aren’t the first person to take the course or training. You don’t have to recreate the wheel. By seeking support and guidance from the ones who have been there, you’ll find nuggets of wisdom that you won’t find from the text. We are in a world of isolation due to the technological revolution right now. Underestimating the wisdom and experience of others by not reaching out can be the difference between success and failure.

Online learning has opened up opportunities for people who aren’t able to get their education through traditional methods. I was finally able to earn my Bachelor degree via online classes after decades of needing to choose between work or classes. I believe all higher education should offer their curriculums online. It would solve their budget problems because more people would take advantage of the opportunity. It’s also a great way to allow workers to get the training they need or to improve their skills without having to miss work or personal obligations. It does require some extra planning to fit into the schedule, however, the time commitment is reduced because it focuses on real work related skills.
