Volunteers are often treated differently than paid employees. It sends confusing messages. Our volunteers come for specific projects as specialists or subject matter experts. Other times they’re resources supplementing our workforce as essential team components. This brings pride and respect from our traditional staff. Highlight the volunteer’s talents, experience, and skill levels. Make their purpose known. Legitimize there presence and contribution to the team. They work independently without being babysat. This prevents or mitigates animosity and anxiety. Give them confidence, responsibility, and accountability to standards employees are held to. Create a culture of respect & cooperation between the regular workers and the volunteers.

I think for every individual the motivation to do good is the inherent motivation and intrinsic to human nature. One can have multiple external factors such as certificates, recognition, reputation among peers but none matches or matters till one is driven from internal factor. The days I hv done something without any agenda for someone/anyone are my best days and I sleep like a baby. When motivation remains intrinsic, outcome or impact brings you the immense joy and that is what’s required. Best assessment is through assigning a handson task and wait for completion- the quicker quality delivery the more motivated the volunteer.

Creating SMART goals that can be approached from different angles requires unique skill sets and language capabilities, but very important to successful volunteer management.

Setting SMART goals is important. A key reason for this is simple, considering that volunteers like any other professionals know where they are heading it's easy to remain focused on the finished line, that will clearly showcase their contributions

One thing I have found helpful is to effectively have a strategy in place which involves focusing on the right tactics that include relevant training,proper supervision, strategic placement. As a well integrated volunteer system ultimately leads to increased?volunteer productivity.

As a professional in a volunteer run organization recognition is very important. Something as simple as a patch (patches are big in Scouting America) can inspire leaders. Other leaders need a certificate or a plaque in a public display. For leaders who hate public recognition it is important for them to see it as inspiration for younger or new leaders.

One thing I’ve found helpful is to acknowledge success of employees with a congratulatory email and copying upper management or executive leadership. Helps people that are far removed from that level to feel seen and recognized.

Provide your teammate a decision making responsibility and rely on that decision. It is one of the best way to recognize their effort and consequently motivate them. Reward the quick learners by announcing their success in adapting to change. This could lead to a new leader in your team.

Regularly upgrading the skills of volunteers through training (ie: workshop, mentoring and coaching) triggers a sense of commitment in the volunteers which could foster retaining a good number of the volunteers over a longer duration compared to leaving them otherwise unattended in terms of enchancing their skills.

Offering professional and personal development opportunities to volunteers serves a couple of purposes. Firstly, it ensures that the people who are volunteering have the skills needed to fulfill the vision of the program. Secondly, it demonstrates that an organization is committed to their vision when they invest in the people who will help contribute to making that vision a reality.

From my point of view it is an opportunity to develop strong and soft skills, not only do you develop and implement knowledge, you also learn to communicate effectively and assertively, you develop a sense of responsibility and autonomy.

An example I have seen was a community of Health Workers, who remained connected through sharing of ideas, best practices and challenges.This was being observed to be one of the best approaches of keeping the volunteers intact, knowledge-wise and winning together.

I began in the business of Athletics as a volunteer but I still described myself as working the game. Therefore when I utilized volunteer staff I tried to compensate in different ways, lodging, food, elite experiences. Over 30 years those individuals have soared to the AD and assistant AD positions. Now even have some working in Major League Baseball. You miss out on opportunities if you are always looking for paid positions. This is especially important for people who wish to transition into sports from other careers. Volunteering is the way in.

One of the organizations I'm heavily involved with has a global platform dedicated to empowering women and girls to achieve SDG5 success stories in their own communities. Developing leadership potential is definitely important, and when people realize they can make a difference it is a great feeling.

Be sincere in what you say and do with your volunteers. Be open to their questions and make them feel comfortable asking you questions.

IMPACT!!! Volunteers don’t just want to be busy. They want to know that their contribution, no matter how small or mundane the task, will have impact. A successful and sustainable volunteer engagement program recognizes the sum ofall its parts.

An organization must be driven by its vision. Volunteers need to be helped to fully under the vision and, most critically, their place in achieving it. And this is yet another way to empower them. Too often, volunteers are viewed as being extras in the organization, but they are critical to its ongoing success and growth. Involving them in actively achieving the mission and working toward the vision helps to create a healthy tapestry of achievement that can and should become its ethos.

Team building outings, inclusive of family is a great way to motivate employees and give family insight to what the employee does.

Touch base often with individual volunteers and small groups working on similar roles. Provide specific feedback on recent services each contributed that resulted in forward progress toward the agency’s prioritized goals, objectives, and overarching mission and/or meaningful client change. Leave small notes or share words of encouragement informally or formally: “Your work with the Rios family made a huge difference in their twins’ school attendance;” “Buuce’s mother called to say your wok on his wheelchair has allowed him to be more independent; “The kindergartners love your reading each week; they can’t wait for you to come again. It has opened up their imaginations.” Such mission-focused, positive feedback is always motivating.
