Highly agreed with this. I will probably answer the entire section. I was going to be an environmental scientist at a younger age, though I ended up being in this field. Will give you details in bullet points: Studied science and conservation. Tried applying conservation to corporates. Understood that conservation matters as it's a focus area of CSR. Tried aligning with corporate interest. Began too technical and scientific (and failed), and understood it was not the corporate vocabulary. Simplified science and made corporates understand. Finding out, what is most important to you just ask yourself the following question: When I had 10 Millions in my bank account, what type of work would or what will be my single point of interest? Answering that question will tell you much about your values and also your personal drivers. Get these clear and then you know what values should be the foundation of your career. That doesn't mean that you do not have to look also for the payment and other hardfacts, but it gives you a good starting point in which direction you could find the greatest fulfillment in your working life.

100% agree here, although I’d go a step further and say that you also want to have a good sense of your personal purpose. Think about your most transformative experiences and consider the common themes there. Once you can articulate your values and your purpose you’ll be able to whittle down the companies that share your values and will help you fulfill your purpose.

Be flexible and do not be shy to apply to a job offer where you do not meet all the requirements. At the moment CSR is on the rise and there are not enough CSR specialists for all the different roles. In addition to that it could also be a good strategy to contact people in your network which are allready working in the sustainability sector. They can give you valuable insights of the different job profiles. So do not waste time and reach out to them!

Understand that all the roles are not alike. In CSR it could be sustainability, ESG or even social/environmental responsibility. Hiring could be for an environmental manager, community manager or even responsibility manager. Use keywords to search. Also sometimes when you search CSR roles, you might also end up finding a customer service representative role. Make sure you look out. Also look for smaller companies that don't have a CSR role, pitch it up to them. It worked for me, and it might work for you too!

This is great advice - also look for role models or leaders in this space that you might already follow or want to emulate. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them to find out more about their career journeys.

Use LinkedIn courses and maybe Coursera too. I have a knack for these platforms. Do online courses in different universities, and the hiring managers will go nuts seeing your CV. Watch short videos and ted talk to get yourself up-to-date. Remember, don't talk of the 2010 if you don't have current statistics. Look up the global CSR trends and search online. This is so vital!

I studied sustainability 15 years (!) ago. I started my career in traditional sales and marketing when it was not a topic, hence did not get to work in the sustainability field though I was passionate about it. 15 years later, I'm trying to combine what I'm good at, sales and marketing, with what I'm passionate about, sustainability. It's not an easy journey as I struggle sometimes to position what I do, but I really value all the skills I've learned in my previous careers. As someone put it to me recently, I love how you manage to bring sustainable practices into marketing easily. Maybe it's because to me sustainability is common sense in my day to day, rather than a complex framework to adhere to.
