Here's how you can infuse creativity into networking and professional relationships.

Networking is hard. Especially for us introverts (ME). So, think a little creatively about how you network. Instead of simply attending an event, maybe you should consider hosting one! Take a step outside of traditional networking environments, and plan something exciting to build a meaningful connection. Personally, I tend to connect with people on a deeper level when I am out hiking in nature more than in a stuffy conference room.

In career and business, your story is your superpower! Personal stories forge genuine connections beyond job titles. Incorporating anecdotes into conversations humanizes interactions, fostering relatability and deeper engagement. Sharing experiences showcases values and skills authentically, leaving a lasting impression and strengthening professional relationships.

If you want to network and connect with people on a whole new level, try bringing in element of emotion. Trust me, you will be memorable if you tell a personal story or 2. They stick in people's minds long after the conversation ends. Not only will they remember you, but they'll probably trust you more. When you can truly be vulnerable and authentic, you will open yourself up to a whole new level of networking.

I recently went to an event where one suggested we used something like 'what was the most surprising thing that happened to you this week?' Although I see the uniqueness in it - I also am a firm believer in remaining authentic, true to yourself. So go ahead and ask/share something you're interested in; something that sparks your curiosity and that shows genuinely who you are. A good tip is to remember we are networking all the time: chit-chat like 'ooh nice weather today, isn't it?' or 'I love your dress' or 'tough time at Central line this morning' are all micro interactions we have with strangers every day - and acknowledging it makes it sound less daunting.

I always like to follow up on LinkedIn - connect and comment something about your first interaction. Something you've discussed that stuck with you, a book you saw and thought of the person, an idea you had after meeting them. This can keep the conversation going and turn it into something useful, positive and interesting for both of you - whilst respecting their privacy and time (or interest) to reply.

Working with another person on your skills and weaknesses could be a great opportunity to grow together. Have good relationships more than work, improve the environment and attitude to face whatever.

Networking can be less intimidating if you think of it as taking small steps for the level of energy you are able to invest it. For some, that may just be starting by saying hi, which can be practiced anywhere you go. ??
