At least for me personally, about 75% of the opportunities I have received, came from a connection in that field, company, or role directly. With the world becoming more and more digitally reliant, that face to face contact is unmatched. Networking events provide an excellent opportunity to get in front of people in your desired field and build that personal connection. I have even met some of my online connections in-person just by attending events regularly, and volunteering in my field of interest. Never underestimate the power of a good connection! Sometimes it is not what you know, but WHO you know.

The word "networking" is very loaded. It conjures images of pushing your job search to a cringey level with people you ask for help. What helps me overcome any aversion to networking is to remember that you bring something to the table when you ask for job search help. If someone takes the time to help you in your search, you can: (1) endorse them on LinkedIn; give them a glowing recommendation on how they mentored you during a transition, (2) offer your expertise and thought leadership on a project/problem they are currently tackling (3) introduce them to someone in your network that would be mutually beneficial. Networking is built on reciprocity.

Another great way to add value when networking is offering to introduce others. Remember that your own network, past colleagues, family members, friends, etc. all may be worth introducing to others that you are networking with. Being a connector is a great way to add value for others.
