Here's how you can infuse creativity into executive coaching programs.

Lifelong learning is crucial in sustaining creativity, especially in executive coaching programs. Incorporating these practices into professional development can lead to a more innovative and fulfilling career.

Absolutely! Cultivating curiosity is fundamental to fostering creativity. As an executive, promoting a culture of inquiry within your organization can unlock a treasure trove of innovative ideas. During coaching sessions, integrate open-ended questions that push boundaries and challenge the status quo.

In a coaching process, curiosity is a valuable asset. It allows the coachee to perceive the coach's interest and to identify situations or emotions that the client is unaware of, which may be limiting or conditioning their actions. It is crucial to remember that the coach must maintain respect and preserve the client's dignity. Therefore, curiosity must align with the objective of supporting the coachee within the specific process being addressed, without encroaching on personal or other matters that the client may choose to keep private.

To infuse creativity into executive coaching programs, coaches can incorporate activities and exercises that encourage brainstorming, lateral thinking, and problem-solving from different perspectives. They can also encourage executives to explore new ideas, take risks, and challenge traditional ways of thinking. Additionally, incorporating art, music, or other creative outlets into coaching sessions can stimulate imagination and inspire innovative thinking.

The best way to enhance creativity into executive coaching sessions is to ask my coachees to experiment with real situations and practice outside of our coaching sessions. It is important for them to interact with their employees, stakeholders, and customers to learn how to improve in whatever they are working on. Through feedback and practice learning occurs.

One thing that I have found useful is to involve a leader’s key stakeholders into the coaching process . Enrolling key stakeholders helps build diversity of perspectives into the coaching process and if managed well can be very empowering for the leader . It’s also relevant to support leaders to accept stakeholder input as gifts !

La técnica que yo recomiendo, a la que le he nombrado 5 minutos de creatividad colaborativa, consiste en dividir un equipo en 2 subgrupos, a cada subgrupo se le hace una pregunta en sentidos opuestos: ?Qué es lo que está generando el problema X? - ?Qué puedes hacer tú para resolver el problema X?. Cada integrante del equipo pasará a un rotafolio y escribirá su respuesta, lo harán tantas veces como se los permite el tiempo, al final de los 5 minutos tendrán suficientes ideas para empezar a analizar aquellos factores que se repiten y así, se encuentra perspectivas diferentes y soluciones viables. Se puede hacer una variante, entregándoles a cada uno, una hoja y que ahí escriban sus respuestas... el resultado será similar.

If it is a team coaching program, we can do this very effectively. But in executive coaching it becomes slightly a challenge but yes, we can give a different flavour. Like in our coaching we can infuse art therapy to do assessments or spiritual intelligence coaches etc.., which i do in my one-on-one coaching just to give them a different flavour but after getting their permission. If they are interested, they will immediately say yes to diverse perspectives.

I run my coaching programme in small cohorts to ensure diverse perspectives are added to the coaching topic. It's also useful to bring in perspectives from various books and authors to challenge thinking and encourage people to hold two diverse perspectives together in their mind.

The best learning happens when you make mistakes. People stress about failing. When we change from fail to fall and empower our team to get back up, it builds skills and resilience. We all win.

I encourage executives to experiment safely, fostering a culture where trying new approaches is encouraged, failures are seen as opportunities for learning, and curiosity is embraced as a driver of growth and innovation within the coaching program.

Creating a safe space for failing and innovating is vital to building a work environment where people can do their best work. Leaders being vulnerable and sharing their failures and risks will help normalize the ability to lean into risk when needed. If teams feel safe, they will think bigger and better understand where the "edges" are. If teams are not failing failing or learning fast, the pace of innovation will slow and stagnate. Leaders want to build a culture of innovation, not incrementality. Incrementality does not push people to move farther faster, but instead, rewards small results which leads to "safe" approaches and flattening growth.

Like how anesthesia is important for safe operation, likewise coaches should also play safe in the session. We cannot take a risk because here both the parties will get affected. The client on one hand will get disappointed or irritated & on the other hand, the coach might lose his reputation & trust. Thus, only after getting everything in written agreement we can include creativity. If not, just go with the flow

In my view, creativity is about simplifying complexity. For any executive aiming to make a difference, I would ask: "On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being extremely simple and 10 extremely complex, how would you rate the work you and your team are currently undertaking? What is one innovation you've implemented in the past 100 days, and what impact has it had on the results?" By initiating a dialogue with executives, employing the '5 whys' technique, and pinpointing redundancies, they will likely discover greater creativity.

Lo que he planteado en la pregunta de perspectivas diversas, también aplicaría en esta pregunta. Esta dinámica permitirá, al final, asignar a un subgrupo en el proceso de análisis y generación de las propuestas para que, al final, se elijan las más viables... dado que todos aportaron sus ideas, se generará un sentido de propiedad sobre las ideas generadas y apoyan las soluciones acordadas.

I encourage executives to have creative problem-solving techniques such as mind mapping, lateral thinking, and design thinking to encourage fresh perspectives and explore innovative solutions within the coaching program.

Coaching doesn't have to be solely focused on conversation. To jumpstart ideas, integrate whiteboarding or freewriting into sessions. With the design thinking mindset, approach issues with a "How might we..." question to open up possibilities and consider new solutions. Have a walking conversation while out in nature rather than being in the office. If the client loves music or art, ask them to represent their strengths or the issue at hand in a musical or artistic style. You could even infuse AI to create images representative of the situation. Take your cues from the client. What brings out their best energy, and how can you tap into their fun and creativity?

Role playing is my favorite. I also like to use brainstorming that doesn't allow discussion or critiquing during the idea capture stage. Just gathers all ideas, no matter how relevant, serious, impossible, or quirky... I mean the "no holds barred" kind of mind-expanding opportunity. There are any number of ways to assure that both introverts and extroverts have a voice. Those who think by talking through an issue can just show up at the meeting and talk. Those who require quiet, time, or visualization to create can ponder for a week before the meeting. Ideas can be collected verbally, in writing, by voicemail, video, as game pieces, paper airplanes, etc. Then you can move to the discussion/evaluating and deciding stages.

If our mind gets distracted frequently, then getting results would become difficult. If reflection needs to happen, our brain & heart has to be calm & relaxed. At times bringing some mindfulness activities will always help to get the client on track. Few coaches try this mindfulness technique. It is very good as i personally use it for the client to reflect better

We sometimes need to start the reflection process from a particular point and for me as a coach when I work with my clients , I see Enneagram coming in very useful ! The tool helps deepen the self awareness, their habitual patters which has played out during their life ! Their "who am I" gets answered to a large extent and gives them a glimpse of their inner world . Reflection to a large extent also brings emotions and cognitive thought process together creating an improved emotional regulation and helps the leader to engage in critical thinking which leads them to better decision making and problem solving !

I incorporate reflective practices like journaling and meditation into the coaching program, providing executives with space for self-discovery and promoting curiosity and self-awareness.

Reflective practice should be the cornerstone of any coaching programme. We learn the best by reflecting on our performance and if it can be a measurable KPI then even better. I encourage my coachees to start journaling about 5 to 10 minutes at the start and at the end of the day. Some basic journaling prompts are useful. E.g. 1. What am I grateful of? 2. How can I make my day great? 3. My positive affirmation for the day? 4. What can I do better today?

Make sure continuous learning includes both Vertical and Horizontal Learning! I find many leaders are very excited about the opportunities to step into new experiences, skillsets and even alternative career paths assuming their biggest opportunities to grow are “out there” when the reality is most often the inner work we do is the most transformational! Be sure to choose a coach who is trained, certified and experienced in supporting high-value outcomes in both to be sure to make the most of your development investment.

Learning is an integral part of the success factor. New elements come only through learning. We need to be upskilling and updating ourselves continuously. Keeping our brain open for new learning is important. We never know which learning will be helping us at what time... Coaching also needs some interesting elements apart from assessment, agreement, serious talks etc.., some new learning should be implemented so as coaches we don't get bored or drained.

I promote a culture of continuous learning within the coaching program, encouraging executives to pursue new skills, explore new interests, and seek out opportunities for personal and professional development, fostering curiosity and growth.

An executive coaching program is either personalized - thus implicitly and strongly creative - or it isn't. We're delving into the true philosophical foundations of coaching... Therefore, the coach must "dance" with the coachee, attuning themselves through excellent systemic listening skills. But that's not all: to be an Executive Coach, to be a Master Coach, one must have a few gray hairs, one must have studied, read, and undergone training on many coaching and personal and managerial development approaches. This array of "methods" and tools makes us agile and, consequently, allows us to articulate our listening and insights in a creative and USEFUL manner for the coachee.

Creativity can come in the best through networking. Things which i don't know, the fellow coaches will be doing it & we can get to know that. They may not teach us but at least that will help us to get some awareness & we can learn those. The other best option is, if we know they are too good at that skill & if that skill can boost our sessions, we can collaborate with them & give that taste to the clients. If we do it or we collaborate with others & do it, the final output is a different feel for the client right?

Ofcourse of all above is important. But most important is to know creativity can be injected. You wouldn't agree, Right ? Yes creativity once exposed repeatedly has the power to move towards adaptability. But a catalyst is needed here. And that's trial and appreciation along with removal of fear of failure. This gives a chance to the employees to be fearless and not be judged or critised for speaking up their ideas.

"To be or not to be.." more creative is the question, and the answer is found is doing ?????????????? the opposite of the things you are currently doing! That action will serve as the "pattern interrupt" vital to all change, it will force you out of your comfort zone, and into the realm of creative enlightenment, like nothing else. Well, with the exception of ??????????????????????, that devil is responsible for more creativity, and more change than the next 10 elements combined! When we get truly desperate we automatically become willing to do things that we previously would never consider, and the next thing we know, we see possibilities, that we could never see before. But we don't have to wait, get into action now!

Encouraging reflection & mindfulness practices to stimulate creative insights. Empower leaders to embrace creativity as a strategic tool for problem-solving & organisational growth.
