I would challenge the assumption of this element of career decision-making. A volume approach is actually supported by business and professional platforms like LinkedIn. You never know when a contact will come in handy in your career path (and vice versa!).

Moreover, your values act as an even keel through the ups and downs, and dynamic changes in the professional job market over your career (and life!).

Too often strategy professionals are so busy giving strategic advice to their organisations or clients, they forget to give that advice to themselves. Treat yourself as you would a client. Of course no one is immune to serendipity or hindsight, but, if you take a step back, often the answers to your career progression are right in front of your nose.

Throughout my career I’ve always started by understanding the business and what the business needs to be successful. From there, I triangulate what I can do to help in my role and what I am passionate about. Sometimes those 3 things don’t line up so you have to compromise but don’t be afraid to move on. I’ve gone from a relatively rudderless journalism major to finding a career in data and AI. Make mistakes, move on quickly, never stop learning.

Let's be honest. How many people do you know who've had a career path that goes in a continuous upwards line? Careers are long and I know a grand total of ZERO people who've had everything go according to plan. I'm a bit sceptical that the pace of change now is any more than say in the early 20th century, but one thing's for sure - the steady climb in one profession, field or organisation is long gone! I would recommend learning from others who have gone before you. This is the path of least resistance. If you are the first, you are trailblazing a new path and only contemplation and the experience of it are genuinely going to get you there. Whatever your career journey is, may time, patience and foresight be with you!
