Answer confidently on core PC components, troubleshooting, and current OS. Highlight certifications, experience, and specific repairs (data recovery, virus removal). Use relevant technical terms, but explain them if needed. Share past fixes, focusing on your problem-solving approach.

Nothing will turn an interviewer off faster than the misuse of terminology. The average everyday consumer might confuse RAM and hard drive or memory and storage, but as an IT professional, you absolutely cannot make that mistake in an interview.

In past, building a computer required knowing about communication ports, IRQ, memory timing and more. Today most computer builds are like assembling a Lego set unless it will be a gaming rig. For most companies, the technician won't take apart the computer and diagnose hardware issues, not cost effective, they will replace the device and move on. I like to know what the cause of hardware problems and track them in the event there is widespread issues and there is a need to be proactively replace the model and start a warranty claim. In past I would replace components on a motherboard or graphics card or repair a monitor. Once again, today that is not cost effective. Don't ask about motherboards unless you repair them.

If you made it to the interview, you are probably good on components, methods, and tools. What separates great technicians from average ones is the ability to understand the problem described by the "customer," and formulating a plan that deals with the issue while ALSO avoiding future issues. For example, if a computer presents with a BSOD, it probably has a hardware / driver issue. But should you repair the driver if the hard drive is also bad and that is what caused the driver failure and resulting BSOD? Be aware that you are not just a problem fixing automaton. You are delivering a complete solution that fixes the immediate issue, prevents it from recurring, and ensures that your "customer" will be happy with their decision.

A computer is an integrated system consisting of many types of hardware with interact together to become a single unit. Knowing this it is easier to distinguish each part and how they can be used to trouble shoot various problems. For instance, if their is a problem with the RAM you will hear beeping sounds and this a clear indication that the memory needs your attention. You will need to switch off your computer open the CPU and check if the RAM stick is properly fitted or needs to be replaced. being keen on the type of RAM your computer uses is key when trying to replace the malfunctioned RAM stick. remember not to touch the tip which shall be fastened to the motherboard as this is not recommended. Always handle the RAM stick gently.

One time at work my colleague called for me saying his computer had refused to turn on. I tried it myself but the light on the CPU would turn on but no display was showing. I tried checking the VGA cables and the okay. I later realized that the CPU fan would start normally then after sometime it would go off by itself. If you are asked a troubleshooting question, you should be able to explain generally where to look for things and not necessarily the click path to get there. Employers will value the fact that you can think logically more than the fact that you know how to get to specific obscure Windows settings.
