? Your goal should not be to impress but express ! How ? There are only 2 parts to it. Being good in core fundamentals and being good at articulation. You will need core technical skills to be able to understand the problem statements interviewer is asking, map it to a generic problem pattern and build a solution. But you will need good communication skills to convey your problem understanding and thinking approach to solve the problem. Start with basic SQL, absorb very limited concepts which are widely used in industry, learn the extraction & loading part, then find how to automate things and lastly the optimisations. In my experience, Apart from building a strong foundation of core technical skills like SQL, Python, Spark, & different ETL methodologies, 2 more skills are also important 1. Data Modelling - I know no body would give you that task being an entry level, however you need to learn that skill to become a great data engineer in future so start early. 2. Develop a connect with your data. Basically, develop a business understanding of data. Not only it will help you to build domain knowledge, however, you will also learn what DQ checks should be in place even before they are explicitly called by business. To me, being an effective data engineer is all about developing a mindset of connecting with data from business perspective.
