From my experience, I found it helps most to identify the exact area of AI that you would find most value in, and narrow in on the innovations that are made within those circles. Participating in forums and reading journals does help, but there is nothing more powerful than implementing these solutions yourself and playing around with them. That is a surefire way to gain deep insight regarding those topics. I do however still suggest throwing an eye over other areas of AI that might not necessarily be of most relevance, because you never know if you are going to see something that you might need later.

Usually, we tend to not follow through on some of these "online courses" that we apply for - God knows that I barely finished any of those. What I think is best to ensure success, is to place yourself in the position to learn as much as possible through implementing those required skills within a project that you find fascinating.
