Here's how you can handle questions about your public speaking experience in interviews.

Most public speakers have some sort of subject matter expertise; when answering experience questions, avoid overexplaining with superlatives and promises. Instead, pick one specific example that illustrates the outcomes you create for audiences/conferences. Ask them questions, the more they talk, the better. If possible, teach them something on the call about what their audience and their conference want or your POV on the subject that is fresh/new or not common. Make the conversation as interesting as any presentation you do.

Being honest is definitely a key ingredient to an effective delivery in public speaking. When you are honest, it comes naturally to mind what comes next when you are communicating and it minimizes the possibility of being nervous or having a stage fright in the middle of your speech delivery. Also, the person you are speaking to, will understand what you are relaying because of the honesty in your communication. If you are being asked a question, take time to think about it before you can answer. Do not rush to speak but, respond clearly, with confidence and above all, with honesty.

I have found that sharing my experience of pivotal moments where my perspective changed resonates with audiences. The stories need to be real, have an interesting arc that demonstrates personal growth.

1. Summarise the range of public speaking engagements you have undertaken (briefly). 2. Choose an example to go into detail on based on the kinds of public speaking you'd have to do in the role. 3. Use the STAR methodology to talk through the event, your objective, the approach you took, the impact it made and what your post activity learnings/reflections are. 4. Be a great interviewee - it's a small audience public speaking activity.

Reflecting on my journey as a public speaker, one pivotal moment stands out. As an intern, I meticulously prepared a presentation with a detailed manuscript. However, just ten minutes before I was set to speak, my supervisor took my manuscript and said, "You're on in 10 minutes." Panic set in, but I had to rely on my preparation and connect with the audience without notes. That experience taught me the power of authenticity in public speaking. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, helping me engage more genuinely with my audience, a lesson I carry into every speaking opportunity today.

Stay true to yourself, your story, your growth, as well as the parts of public speaking that still are a challenge. You may have overcome stage fright, but you are still navigating dropping ice breakers or humor infusion. That does two things, your reflection is accurate, showing what needs work and those listening to you see that you get better at speaking by speaking.

Some of the best public speakers are those that interact with the audience. If you are scared of speaking in front of people, the best way to calm your nerves is to engage with those you are speaking to. By doing this, you are humanizing what is otherwise a crowd of unknown people. Engaging with the audience is an incredible sign of growth to an interviewer, and is a natural way to highlight one of your experiences doing so.

I tend to lean more on my natural talent for speaking than I should. While this might work well when you are comfortable and well-versed on the subject matter, it does not necessarily work well when you do not know the topic well, or do not know your audience. In these cases, stick with your PowerPoint and deliver the subject matter in a neutral , pleasant matter.

When it comes to my speaking experience, I always emphasize my expertise in delivering valuable content and providing practical tools for my audience. I thrive in interactive venues where there is ample opportunity for engagement and discussion. My main goal as a speaker is to ensure that the audience walks away with actionable knowledge and insights related to the specific subject matter.

When it comes to speaking, I always listen to the event organizer and hear what it is they want you to tease out. After a call, I start to refine the powerpoint deck to fit. their needs and time restrictions. Refine, refine, refine! I have heard that you need to run through a deck roughly 20 times to make sure you know the material back to front. This way you can smash when you are on stage and not worry about where you are or what is coming up next. There are no shortcuts to the work. If a group trusts you to speak to their members you better be ready to smash and blow their expectations out of the water. Do your research on what matters to the interviewing company (goals, financial results, quality, customer successes, role objectives) then laser focus your compelling personal stories towards what matters. Your efforts in research can differentiate you from the competition. Demonstrating your skill in linking your experiences to that research further engages interviewers.

Your stories are your proof and the best things to talk about.... In a public speaking interview, I recommend that you give examples for whatever lessons you have learnt from your experience. These examples go a long way to explain your speaking journey, showing growth, resilience and whatever other value to be learnt from you. Keep your audience alive with examples of your public speaking experience.

From my experience having examples, especially personal examples are very effective. I also find it best to lead with a story or personal example before delving into the subject matter. The example or story should be relevant, impactful and easy to follow. The icing on the cake is if there is a bit of humor in the story or it’s one that most of the audience can relate to.

Examples are so important, they show how you've applied knowledge you've learnt. However we often get bogged down in the intricacies whilst forgetting the biggest thing: impact! How has this experience shaped what you do, what were the outcomes, how did you reflect and learn, did it go wrong but you've thought about what could be changed? Don't forget the so what!

It is a good idea to connect with the interviewer, if possible. Many a times, the questions are shared by the interviewer before hand to the interviewee. This helps the entire process of interviewing a lot more lucid and easy to navigate. This also helps you prepare all the areas of your expertise to be demonstrated during the interview. Now, demonstration of expertise should be done in a way that it sounds like a learning path and not a code of complex achievement, making audience feel educated rather than confused.

Early in my business I got the chance to be a breakout panelist at a large event. I was low on the speaker ranking, but I knew it was an opportunity. The questions were sent ahead of time. I worked hard to create memorable, compelling statements that would have impact. The result? It lead to a client opportunities. The lesson is simple: work hard to craft memorable, sticky answers. It's the easiest way to stand out and be remembered.

One thing I’ve found helpful in the past is to find a friend or colleague that is willing to do a mock interview with you. Do it first with no preparation on your part, but write down the questions they ask and a summary of your responses. After the mock interview is over, review everything with the same individual and discuss what you would have changed had you not been put on the spot. You now know the areas you need to better prepare in for the real interview. This is something I’ve done in non interview situations as well, such as when I was preparing to defend my graduate capstone. Because of this training, I was more prepared for questions than I ever would have been had I rehearsed on my own.

There are at least four ways to prepare for potential questions about your experience: (1) by recounting your experiences, (2) consulting interview books to find potential questions, (3) putting yourself in the interviewer's shoes to guess what they care about, and (4) asking internal people (such as the recruiter) for questions that might be asked. Recounting your experiences is very powerful. Just write down your speaking experiences. Remember the challenges you faced and how you overcame them. Recall the audience type and size, and your topics. The more detail you capture, the better you'll be able to answer those hardest "tell me about a time" questions such as "tell me about a time you faced a hostile audience," etc.

The ability to adapt on how you communicate depending on who is in the crowd will set you apart from the rest. For example: I personally love to mingle and talk to as many people as I can before I have to jump up and host to get to know who I am talking to. Assimilate is the name of the game. When you have others best intention at heart, majority of the times they will have yours - this is a team effort, be part of the team at any cost. Many times I find myself in a very professional setting, yet the owners and staff are fun and very laid back. I will adapt to how I communicate. Important to remember: You don’t feed off the crowd, the crowd feeds off you. Give them your very best!

Everything mentioned is valid and germane to public speaking. It is the number one cause of “fear” for most people. I recommend making lectures, or talks fun and interactive. I ask my audience questions because I want to know how they think and I want them to be involved. Most talks or lectures I have seen just involve the speaker talking to and/or at the audience. This can be a mental deterrent. Knowing something about the listeners will give the speaker important cues to work from. This way there is a two-way simultaneous transmission of thoughts, information , and feelings which place everyone on a common level. Hence, we have a perfect example of good communication without the fear mode as a deterrent. Hope this assists your speaking.

Comedians are great people to study for delivery. They're only as good as their ability to deliver for 60+ minutes straight. So watch them. See their pacing, timing, and delivery. Then figure out what's most comfortable and natural for you.

Preparing to speak publicly can be very personal. Some people like creating a detailed script for themselves, others prefer to put more effort into presentation resources. Finding a balance that's right for you is crucial. It's important to be knowledgeable and accurate whilst also being conversational, that's how you'll engage your audience. If you're struggling with nerves or your voice isn't used to projecting, you could try some vocal warm up exercises beforehand. Focus on your breathing and stretch the muscles in your face, that'll help with making sure you can speak clearly and confidently

In my opinion, one of the best things you can do is record yourself and then watch. If it’s uncomfortable, adjust what you do not like. I am still working on my crooked smile!

One should enter the whole interview experience as a mutually explorative experience which should be positively and enjoyably anticipated! The goal, mutually, is to determine the fit between the candidate and the job. In that exploration the candidate can also ask the interviewers what their experiences and speaker learnings have been, etc.. I have had very good outcomes with that attitude and approach. Just my opinion.
