With this in mind, always remember we are always WIPs (Works in progress), and can aim to improve. The most important part in beginning to receive this feedback is listening, separating the frustration from the key components. You are listening to empathize/sympathize, whilst doing detective work to understand what the underlying cause of the frustration may be. This will enable you to effectively trouble-shoot afterward. If a client is frustrated that career strategies didn’t work, you could say, “I understand your frustration and appreciate your honesty. Can you share more details about what didn’t work for you? Let’s find a strategy that better suits your needs.” This approach turns negative feedback into an opportunity for growth. Staying calm is extremely important, but at times may be difficult. This is where you get to test your patience muscles! Remember, the client's frustration is not so much with you as it is with their current outcome. Many times you will be attacked when clients are frustrated. Sometimes, those attacks will raise in volume, and sometimes the attacks are what I consider "jugular" in their wording (looking to inflict pain). This is where you need to remind yourself, that you are not looking to win an argument, but rather be an effective team member. Their success is your success. This being said, no one deserves to be treated with disrespect and you are welcome to end a conversation that is repeatedly proving to be disrespectful.

Some Reflection Techniques that might be helpful: Journaling: Write down the feedback and your thoughts about it. Self-Assessment: Regularly review your performance and client interactions. Free flowing Communication is critical in any professional commitment. The key is to not get personal but think professionally about where you went wrong, reflect critically and accept if there was any gap from your end. The best is to spend 1 minute discussing the problem and rest 29 minutes discussing the solution. Client will feel relieved the moment you accept and apologize and soon after client will be in the right mindset to discuss now what can be done.

As a counselor, we need to be resilient and be open to feedback. Also if plan A doesn't seem to fit in for a client, counselor should exhibit flexibility and discuss Plan B and perhaps C. Once the client agrees on the plan, its the best to put timelines and action items expected from the student and well as the counselor. This is give your client immense confidence and trust in your ethics in counseling services.

Small but Significant Adjustments: Even minor changes can show clients you value their feedback. For instance, if a client felt their concerns were not addressed promptly, ensure to follow up more diligently in future sessions.

We are all WIPs (Works in Progress), we can always improve. Yes, even when we are the best in our field. Seeking support is a good thing, sometimes we need a fresh set of eyes, need additional input, and need a sounding board to work with to bounce those ideas off. Additionally, remember that when we receive negative feedback, regardless of taking it well, it does take a toll on us. Remember, to do something for yourself to help vent the frustration. Sometimes that is seeking support with a colleague, sometimes it may be working out. Figure out what support you need in order to be as effective as possible in your role!

Sometimes clients have their biases and its important for a counselor to differentiate whether the negative feedback from the client is their personal bias or a genuine concern. Example- Unrealistically Ambitious parents/ students- Every counselor bumps into some parents and students who don’t understand best fit course and university at all. They make counselor’s life very tough by either pushing the counselor for a higher ranked university. If the counselor disagrees, you are likely to receive a negative feedback. So a counselor should also be selective about their clients and ensure that client and counselor have parity in their thoughts and approach.
