Drop the "we have always done like this." Disrupting the comfort of "how things are done" is the cornerstone of igniting a creative fire. This can be achieved through a Socratic maieutic – a midwife-like approach where the coach asks probing questions that expose the underlying assumptions and biases inherent in current practices. For instance, instead of delving into the past for what has happened and how victimized we might feel, one approach I implement (based on the executive) is to take a blank canvas, note down all our thoughts, and rip up the page. Another approach is to draw a diagram on the page of how we feel (creating in quite a literal sense) look at the reflection of the image against a mirror, and note any changes to our altered perception.
