I have built remote working organisations for around 10 years now and have learned that it’s crucial like any org, to build a sense of belonging. The way we interact across time zones and countries is very rich and it’s very possible to create a vibrant culture. It needs a mindset and a wonderful set of communications tools. But not just tech! It’s about having a balanced mix of sync and a sync mechanisms in place. Regular cadence and catch-ups are essential. Workflows are a wonderful tool to augment this. Making sure we share updates automatically and drive transparency through them is essential. It creates strong communication flow. Like any business, organisational design is essential. But we make it intentional and interactive.

This helps team members keep a thread of what’s going on if they wish and allows for open contribution. How can someone express an opinion if they don’t know what’s going on? Be open! Openly engage!

With great workflow in InfoSec that also embraces important principles of least privilege, we can still have a rich communication flow. We are sensible and recognise that most people don’t need access to all data. But the communication but be super accessible. We respect peoples time zones / preferred working routines too and facilitate collaboration by respecting this first. It works well and has such a buzz to it.
