The fundamental thing in the establishment and sustaining the workplace safety is the genuine care for the people in your team. When one is successful to make this feel by one’s team members, co-workers, employees, peers then the company will see the benefits from this not only by safety performance improvement, but also by how the environment changes and improves in the organisation. Whoever makes this happen wears a hat of a formal or an informal Leader. And this works not only with workplace safety performance, but overall with the organisation’s performance.

The best way of engaging with frontline workforce for hearing their inputs for risk assessment and mitigation strategies is asking relevant to risks and hazardous factors open questions and listen to the their responses without judging and biases even when the responses sound non-relevant, stupid, ordinary. There are 2main things: 1. Asking questions with genuine curiousity and encourouging participation in answering; 2. Listening, i.e. creating an environment and safe space for showing up without hesitation and fear. Believe me, amongst these responses you will find the key for the success of the safeguards development and not less by importance implementaition of them by the workforce conciously with pleasure and responsibility.

Giving them more authority makes them more devoted to following procedures. Regular safety meetings and open forums for voicing concerns and suggesting improvements keep everyone engaged and informed. Show respect and be a man and do what you do. Lead by example . Don’t make excuses for your team if they make mistakes don’t bring them down show respect for the other people that you care for.

Recognition as well as awarding for the sake of reinforcing the positive behaviors is one of the key tools for motivating and it works great! However, there are nuances in implementation of this approach. It can be easily turned into a technical approach deminishing the recognition. Actions for recognitions should be very specific, impactful and the most important sincere. How to evaluate the last one? It is an Adaptive challenge... the very challenge...
