Before conflicts arise due to differences in perspectives or ways of doing things, dialogue and empathy allow us to recognize and understand others, as well as to value that diversity.

Know how and when each of your team members like to be recognised. For example, not everyone wants to be recognised in a public manner; some prefer thanks in a 1-1 meeting with their manager or small group setting.

It is part of our business’s culture to recognise our teams’ contributions and give credit where it is due. We found it not only fosters pride and morale but also gives way to creativity. This recognition at times might only be via a quick phone call or a group message, but it still creates positive reinforcement where they still feel valued, leading to increased engagement and a stronger sense of camaraderie.

At the end of the day, people just want to be appreciated and feel like they are valued. Recognize. Praise. Acknowledge a job well done. Sometimes this can be large and monetary, sometimes it’s just a phone call, an email blast, a callout on a team call. Make them feel valued and recognized, and you will likely have a highly engaged team. Recognize in public, critique in private.

However, this approach can inadvertently lead to continuous labeling and segregation. Leaders should focus on accepting all styles, personalities, characters, and opinions to build diverse teams. By doing so, they can create self-driven and heterogeneous teams that are well-diverse. It would benefit organizations to expand the concept of ERGs by embracing the diversity of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personalities to promote a broader range of opinions.
