Regularly reviewing the progress, taking feedback from various stakeholders, taking the right course corrections if needed & appreciating the contributions foster the culture of innovation in the organizations.

Communication is essential in R&D. To achieve the desired objective, fluid, continuous and, above all, multidirectional communication is necessary (it cannot be either unidirectional or bidirectional). This is achieved with dialogue, always adapted to different circumstances and different collaborators, the same template does not work for everything and everyone.

In my experience, active listening plays crucial role in projects where many employees are working on a single output. It is highly important to listen to others and their opinions. An employee who has open mind to listen to others is a good leader. He/she will succeed in their career by improving their skills by adapting new methods.

However providing unbiased comments, genuine behavioural culture, not hurting sentiments can be a challenge. 360 degree feedback i have observed from my 30 years of corporate journey led to leapfrog jump in attitude and seemless progression. Some though didn't reflect positive change.

Imagine a team with a biomaterials expert who understands the challenges of tissue integration, working alongside a surgeon familiar with the complexities of limb attachment procedures. Although in some projects, it may be more interesting to have a team with similar experience and a lot of experience working together.

I truly believe that a diverse team is the greatest catalyst for innovation. Bringing together different perspectives and expertise, as well as different types of thinkers can help to identify problems as well as expedite solutions. Personally, I have been a part of several innovation teams that comprised and leveraged diverse scientific expertise, but the most effective teams were those that comprised individuals from diverse backgrounds (career education, culture). These teams learned not only how to solve problems but also how to operate more effectively as a team. Diverse skillsets will make any team better, but diverse life experiences will help your team become truly innovative.

Clarity and brevity. From my point of view these two concepts are essential. Clear objectives, set times,... Meetings do not always have to be for the entire department, they can be more transversal. And always accompanied by graphic material and simple and attractive presentations. Extending meetings and presentations only contribute to the dispersion of the team

It is important to create a supportive environment that nourishes innovation by developing a culture of competency, encouraging collaboration, and maintaining open channels for idea exchange. This involves practices such as holding collaborators in unconditional positive regard, committing to honesty, and maintaining a consistent work pace to keep teams moving forward. Moreover, emphasizing communication and transparency, inviting multiple perspectives, and asking for new ideas from employees and stakeholders are key steps to drive change and innovation. The most important questions to ask any research team, and often the series of questions that will point out the problems in your R&D approach in a specific project is: What are you trying to prove with that series of experiments? What happens to your thesis if the answer to the experiments is positive? What happens to your thesis if the answer to the experiments is negative? What are the obvious next steps in either case? If you can not clearly answer any of those questions your team needs to go back to the drawing board. You would be surprised how often a research group or a team leader can not clearly answer those basic questions.

R&D team, should also work in a close cooperation with product development, manufacturing and commercial/sales teams. Otherwise - R&D team will end up in doing what they might think is good and important, but actually, that might be adding no value to the organization and it's business strategy.
