Providing effective positive reinforcement is surprisingly subtle. We often assume the people around us will be pleased or encouraged by the acts or words that we ourselves find positive. This isn't always the case. To use myself as an example, people often assume I will appreciate being thanked profusely when I have performed a service for them. But for me, a single 'thank you' feels good while many repetitions makes me squirm and look for ways to escape from the speaker. When you are looking to reward another, take some time to observe what they do when they are relaxed. Try to figure out what they like or choose for themselves. For one person sharing a joke may be positively reinforcing, for another it may be a few minutes of silence.
